In Place of the Poem

Of numerous refuge: New Orleans, Montana, California, Ithaca. Islands of history in a willed blank destiny. For me it's what's not New Jersey. The mind is its own place.

Meaning in place, not of it. Migrate to the site of meaning you stand in. The discursive remnant in the poem, alienated from both empirical rationality and lyric intensity, shines through the text, a powerful seam that divides and connects what would otherwise wear the mask of identity. The groove in a peach. Sexual site of difference between the phallic symbolic of discourse and the phallic imaginary of lyric. Trace of the document invading the lyric space with networks of relation. Fracture in autonomy that re-discloses its agency, mediating the made. Utopian "not yet": not not-this-but-that but not-this-yet-this—that is, thisness, a minimal guarantee of subjectivity with noplace to stand but in proximity, felt distance, extimacy. Strengthening lengthening, the drives' ebb and flow. The frustration of intention is required if the truth of listening is to enter the poem.

Heaven of hell: in the ebb of negativity we wash up in a momentary Arcadia. For a moment we stand in Heidegger's clearing, Being-with a few others we have invited. Straining for Pan’s song and not hearing it until we lapse into apperception. At that moment the tide turns and we’re swept back out to battle the world as it is: hell of heaven. The memory of heaven lifts our exhausted arms.
